The Complete Anxious, Avoidant, and Disorganized Attachment Recovery Workbook with Somatic Therapy by Emma Phillips was an enlightening read. Although there were a few parts that felt like a repeat that could have been condensed, the way the author wrote the book took you through a logical explanation of why somatic therapy could help with different attachment issues. I really felt the order of the chapters was extremely helpful, as they built on each other in a natural way. I’ve heard of somatic therapy before but felt like it was something that might be too difficult for me to do with health issues such as fibromyalgia, and it felt overwhelming to learn about. The author made the topic manageable and easily understandable. I have PTSD, so there are times when I can logically explain what is happening with what I am feeling but can’t stop the feeling. This book explained why that might be and gave me some great exercises to try the next time I am having trouble. While there are some exercises in the book, this isn’t what you would consider a workbook. It is a nonfiction work, so you should prepare for some reading. The workbooks are accessed through codes that take you to an online site. While I was initially unhappy about that, I think it’s a good strategy and should be a more adapted approach. The author says this is to allow you to reprint the sheets and take as much room to write as you need. I like that because I often don’t want to ruin the workbook pages of books because I’d like to reuse them or redo them at later times. I also don’t always have adequate room to write, so I also enjoy that. Additionally, the author also has videos to help you see the exercises as you do them. This is extremely helpful and makes it feel more like something I could do than I initially felt when I heard about this topic. I would recommend this book if you’ve experienced any trauma, work with those that have experienced trauma, or are struggling with how you treat yourself and are unhappy with the way you relate to others.
